CLEARWATER, Fla. - It was on a pleasant afternoon that Charlie Manuel exploded.

The Phillies had just lost for the seventh time in eight games, and six of their eight projected regulars were hitting below .250. As he sat in a tunnel outside the Phillies clubhouse with reporters gathered around him, his voice bore the tone of disgust.

"It's about time for us to talk," Manuel began, referring to his lackluster team, then launched into a diatribe about what he perceived to be complacency on the field.

This was March 15.

Of 2008.

So as the Phillies prepare to face Florida State tonight in their exhibition opener and the Yankees tomorrow afternoon in their first Grapefruit League game, know this: While Manuel understands the nature of spring training...
